I recently attended the nGage ET6 Enterprise Transformation Exchange in Tucson, AZ. Captured by the comfortable venue, great food, keynote presentations, and fun activities, I found the format of the 2-1/2 day event quite beneficial.
Each morning, we had a series of use case meetings with ~ 14 attendees per session, allowing us time to share success stories and interact on Q&A. This was followed by 1:1 sessions in the afternoons with 14 selected attendees lasting 25 minutes each. Here, more time was provided to understand each attendee’s work focus and challenges.
One interesting trend was the IT folks’ deep interest to address business opportunities, sort of bridging the gap between IT and OT. Several discussions were shared on how to improve their customers’ experience and generate additional revenue for their companies. While IT support, cyber security, and a host of other related tasks are a constant concern for every organization, we’re seeing time and effort put into supporting and even leading OT initiatives.
Going back to the keynotes, VANTIQ CEO, Marty Sprinzen, gave an inspiring talk on industry trends. He shared how, in the 1950’s, telephone use across the US was growing so rapidly that there was quickly becoming a need for every high school graduate to become a telephone operator. Technology stepped in to alleviate this bottleneck.
Today, software is becoming so ubiquitous in enterprises (with Gartner quoting “By 2020, 50% of new user-facing applications developed will be event-driven applications.”) that a new shortage of developers is upon us. Unless we can get every college grad to write code, opportunities will be missed. Technologies such as the VANTIQ PaaS solution are coming to the rescue.
